What should I use to seal an outdoor playset?

We have a wood playset that we purchased on Craigslist and have sanded. We are planning to stain it this evening but I would also like to seal it so that the wood doesn’t splinter as it’s exposed to weather (we live in Colorado). Does anyone have suggestions about how to seal it? Polyurethane?

I would not stain it.

For wood outside I find a mixture of paint thinner and linseed oil is the best to preserve wood. A 50-50 mix is best but can take a while to dry. 1/3 oil to 2/3 thinner is fine. You will need to reapply this every year but it is easy.

When I polyurethaned things it last a bit longer but did not seem to look as good.

And Thompsons water seal is junk.

Polyurethane – probably every year.
